Primer??

Primer??

#1

Have to spray a 30x84 piece of 1/8 masonite to get it an even flat black.   I'll be using a flat black acrylic enamel for the final.
For anyone here who's worked and painted  the stuff, what (if anything) did you use as a primer to get an even surface?
I can use a coat(s) of dewaxed shellac, but wondering what others have tried.

Thanks

I'll venture a guess that -- particularly if it's oil-tempered masonite -- that you might want to scuff sand the surface to improve adhesion. I don't profess to know this as a fact, but it would be an easy prep step with nothing to lose.

I agree with Ellis. I would give a light sanding over the entire surface to break the glaze.

600 grit Abralon should do, but what about a primer?

I would be surprised if anything was better than dewaxed shellac, vs. other offerings being recommended because they're a bigger margin for retailer, wholesaler and manufacturer.

A couple of years ago, though I ordered BIN when I couldn't find it locally (white shellac, of course). Instead, I got a Zinnser can that said bin and in writing below it "synthetic shellac". It was terrible. it dried with poor adhesion and you could scrape it off.
