A few years back, a local contractor doing a reno of a downtown law office offered up some mahogany for reclaim, in the form of raised panel doors and baseboards. I am still working off the stack I picked up there. A few previous posts here on WoodCentral have also been made from this stash: a queen bed and a Covid desk are ones I can remember.
Here I made three similar pieces for our three sons and wives using the raised panels recovered from the doors. These finished at approximately 22+ inches long, and max of about 4" wide. Band-sawn curves (carefully b/c care there eliminates a lot of sandpaper 'shaping'), sanded, added a routed and sanded V-groove in the middle, and a seal coat with shellac and then sprayed with Targets EM6000 Acrylic lacquer (3 coats).
I'd like these best as part of a centerpiece on a table - that way you see the curves. Of course, these can work on a mantel too, but I think it loses something because in profile these are just a block of wood.
In use:
I also made a 4th for a friend who specifically was looking for a table centerpiece, but one for 10 candles. This one is walnut, and measures about 28" long and was about 6" wide.
