Oak cane shaft for a carved antler head piece

A customer had found this carved antler cane head piece and asked me to make shaft of the case. (I didn't carve the antler, but it is a very cool carving). I wanted something to complement the carving. I decided on a red oak twist carved to be like a rope. It is a 3-bine twist, but it is stretched to double the pitch to make it look more rope-like. After sanding, I sprayed it with lacquer to seal it, then sprayed it with lack lacquer to blacken the cane. I let that set up a bit, then used lacquer thinner rags to wipe away some black to expose the wood and show the grain. I like the effect and so does the customer. We'll size the length when they take delivery. Black rubber tip on the bottom end.

I also made a rope twist with a natural finish to give them a choice. I'll make another cane out of that.

Red oak, 3/4", 3-start twist, black lacquer finish.

That stick is very nicely finished. Wild looking top.

Ok hard to imagine using that 'toppper' or head piece as a cane, at least I can't imagine I'd want to.
