Cabinet case thickness? 1/2" or 3/4"

Cabinet case thickness? 1/2" or 3/4"

#1

Since I started this project I have been looking at different cabinets from different sources.  Some custom made other from MFG's. What I have noticed is the case construction seems to be mostly 1/2 thick ply.

Is there any reason to use 3/4" over 1/2" or visa versa?

I have made two for practice out of 3/4", and I am getting ready to buy the plywood for the real ones.  I already have the Maple for the drawers and Popular for the face frames.

 Just wondering

How you would securely attach a face frame to 1/2" sides is beyond me; there's just not enough meat there in my opinion.

I have 1/2" plywood cabinets hanging from french cleats for about 20 years with books and other fair loads. I was able to attach face frames and doors but don't remember exactly how, probably biscuits. If I were making base cabinets that may have a load in the cabinet plus another load on top I'd go 3/4".

Rout a 1/2" channel 1/4" deep in the back of the face frame to match the case.  Then glue on your frame.

1/2" for lighter uppers, but 3/4" for the base and uppers that will take weight like dishes or books
