The first two boxes I made with 1/2 back and bottoms. I was watching videos etc, and see a lot of them made with 1/4 inch backs. These are going to be painted white on the inside along with some color on the outside. Which leads to my question.
For the lowers cabinets will 1/4 inch work for the backs, without issue? I am thinking it would, and would save me some cash flow.
I am going to leave the uppers 1/2 inch so I can secure it to the wall.
I am going to keep the bottoms panels 1/2 inch on both the uppers and lowers.
I was gone a few days to MD for a 50th Wedding Anniversary so I haven't been working on these. I have talked my brothers into coming in Jan to help install them, so I had better get to work.
Thanks
Mike

Sounds like a plan, Mike. Nobody will notice the thin material on the lower cabinet backs, and strength isn't really an issue here.

#3Thanks.
I figured as much, but I also figured I had better check first.

#4I would opt for at least 3/8" for the backs. You may need to secure the back to a wall stud if it is subject to tilting when heavy drawers are pulled out. I have a stand-alone cabinet that houses trash and compost bins behind a single pull-out "door" drawer. The unit would tilt or tip without being secured to the wall.

I have always used 1/4" plywood cabinet backs. The top and the bottom of the cabinet has a stretcher from side to side, I make them about 1-1/2" wide solid wood. If I have 3/4" thick sides I attach the stretcher with a pocket screw into the side and then staple through the bottom into the stretcher and on the upper cabinets the top is stapled into the stretcher, making it very secure. I let the backs into the sides with a 1/4" x 1/4" rabbet.

#6I built several cabinets a few years back and used 1/4 material for the backs. They are sturdy. One is actually a hanging cabinet. I used 3/4 plywood for a top and bottom stretcher on this one.
