A Lesson In "White Wood"

#1

Had to get and use some 1x6 boards to make some trim for an office partition.  Proprietor wanted knotty stuff stained as walnut, but not the cost of actual walnut.
So off to Lowes for some of their "Whitewood".
Get the stuff back to the shop, clean up the edges a bit , and start in with the Minwax stain on the hide-side.
Strange.  This stuff doesn't like stain.  Hmmm
So take another board and give it a  once-over with 120. . . sand paper seems to load up quickly.
Back to the stain, and . . . . world of difference (but still looks like stained softwood. Yuck!)
I've dealt with mill glaze before but nothing like this.  It's almost as if  there's some kind of finish applied that inhibits the stain's penetration.
Several discs later, the stain acts like it's supposed to act.

Note to self:  Walk on by the Borg's milled lumber unless I figure on doing a lot more preparation.

I've never tried to finish anything fresh off the truck from a Borg. I usually joint & plane and yeah, 2 Xs no longer are, usually end up about 1 3/8". But that removes any coating. I usually use 'white wood' for mockups and "don't care what it looks like" projects. I've had decent luck with spraying dewaxed shellac with TransTint then top coat with some sort of clear protective coat.
