Curly cedar bowl

Several years ago, I found a small red cedar log that looked like it had grown sideways out of a hill and then shot upward from there. This summer, after I got myself a nice used Nova lathe here at summer HQ, I wasted no time in scoping out the possible turnings in this log. The bark on the inside of the elbow of the log (sorry, I should have taken a picture of this before I sawed it up into bowl blanks) appeared to have very fine ripples, so I knew there was some great curl in there. Little did I know how remarkable it was, until I started turning it. When I finally flooded it with diluted varnish, the tight curls really popped. Here's the finished result. I'll definitely be keeping my eye out for odd bits like this in the future.

I love the simple bowl design that highlights the beautiful wood grain.

Thanks Dale. I suppose one of the reasons I am still firmly in the "round and brown" school of woodturning is that I believe the wood should speak for itself. My job is to find a form and finish that best complements the inherent character of the wood and doesn't compete too much for attention. When I was first getting serious about woodworking as a medium of expression, I recall the excitement of opening up a log and exposing the surprises that waited inside, like cracking open a geode. That fascination is still with to this day. I'm thinking that many, if not most, of our members here feel similarly.
