Bolt

Just playing with threading.

Re: Bolt

Hi Ray.

That looks interesting.  The threads look a bit finer than those you typically see cut in wood.  Can you provide some details on how you accomplished the threading?  Chasing? Threading jig (like the Beall?), thread cutting metal lathe?  I'm interested cutting threads in wood and would appreciate more information on how you get started.

Cheers.

Re: Bolt

I am doing the threads on a ornamental turning lathe. The lathe spindle is pushed out and turns with a lead screw. The cutting tool is stationary and rotates at about 20000 RPM. It's 11 threads per inch.

Thanks Ray.  A bit above my meager abilities and/or equipment.  Do you have any pictures of your ornamental lathe set-up to share?

Cheers.

Thanks Ray.  Very cool looking apparatus and from the initial picture it works very well.  What other forms can you make with it?  I assume it is not limited to threads.  Your own design and construction?

Be safe and stay well.

For one of my antique combination planes. Can you do other thread count, and willing to do a custom job?

Re: Very cool. Im needing a wooden threaded knob,

I need to know the thread count and the O.D. of the part. I am only set up for 11 TPI now.

It seems to be metric

With 3mm thread, on a 22mm diameter.

Re: It seems to be metric

Sorry, don't have anything to turn metric. a coarse m22 is 2.5

If you get a hard enough wood (most exotics and some domestic, like Osage orange) can take a thread with a regular tap.  I do this on my bottle stoppers before turning.

You can also reinforce threads in softer woods with CA glue.  Just run the tap in once , coat the threads with glue and run the tap in again after the glue has catalyzed.
