sanding sealer
Is there any particular sanding sealer brand you can recommend for turnings. I don't want to spend $40 if I can get by with a more economical brand. TIA

Re: sanding sealer
Krylon Matt Finish does quite well. Especially good if you raise the grain first.
Re: sanding sealer
Are you asking about lacquer sanding sealer, water based sanding sealer, or something else? Thinned shellac makes a good sanding sealer. I hope you are asking about a quart size, because gallon sizes are now close to $100 or more!
Re: sanding sealer
If I'm looking for a true sanding sealer, I generally use either thinned Deft lacquer or thinned shellac. Which I use is determined by what my final finish will be (or, more typically, whichever is closest to hand). However, on the lathe I generally wet sand with walnut oil as my lubricant. If I do that, there generally isn't the need for a sanding sealer.
Re: sanding sealer
I sometimes use Mylands SS -- it's a cellulose lacquer and is best when thinned 50/50 with lacquer thinner.

Re: sanding sealer
what is the best thinner for shellac?
Re: sanding sealer
There is only one thinner for shellac, alcohol. In most cases denatured alcohol, but access to that in California has caused some of those folks to be creative.
