Wheelbarrow Handles

Managed to get in a little woodturning yesterday. Actually, it was longer than my lathe can hold. Last year when I modified my dust collector to fit on that cart, I made provisions for the tail stock from the lathe to attach to it as well. The lathe has a 47" capacity, but my project (wheelbarrow handles) needed to be 60". I finally got to use the extra feature today. I lined up the cart and put a couple of clamps on a board to hold it to the lathe.

After cutting the blanks, I used my trim router to put a small radius on the corners to prevent splintering. This Jatoba, is sheer murder for small needle splinters. It was what I had on hand that was straight grained & strong.

Unfortunately the wood bowed a bit and my chuck kept loosening up. I was not able to get perfect ends on the handles, but better than some manufactured handles I've seen. Choosing a heavier cart that doesn't vibrate quite so much would have been helpful, but it got the job done.

Cool project! I'd have tried to find my spokeshave. I'd probably still be looking...

I considered that, I have several. Leaving the hand grips with a nice octagon shape like the rake handle I made last year. You would think that a piece of wood sitting in a shop for a dozen years would be better behaved :) I was just itching to try out the lathe detachment though.
