Going Lightly - Tip

Between face shield and glasses, it gets hard to resolve a "fair" curve in profile, especially when the curve is shallow.  I therefore bring one of my lathe lights to bear.  More than just lighting ridges, the raking light picks up very slight variations in the entire length of the piece, making it much easier to perfect the curve.  Here you can see the slight flattening on the center section and the inflation in the bottom (left) section.  The "Hero" cut makes this easy to control.  When the light flows evenly along the curve you're pretty close the "fair".

good tip

I use it too.

You can also use it to judge the inside curve of a bowl in a similar fashion -- see the work of Eric Lofstrom when he does his "Namaste" series bowls.
