Is there one kind of sanding sealer that is better than others?  Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

For Turnings

I prefer Krylon's "Fix-i-tif" or "Matte Finish" used by charcoal/pastels artists.  You're  not asking for grain filler, correct?  A spit coat of diluted (1/2lb cut) dewaxed blond shellac also works well.

Mr. Mandell:  No.  No grain filler.  Thanks for your response.

I often just use rattle can lacquer, then sand it back.

I should have added that rattle can lacquer is high in solvent, so it penetrates much better than brush-on lacquer

Re: sanding sealer

I use regular Deft lacquer cut with about 10% acetone as both sealer and sometimes a rubbed in finish when I don't want built up finish.

Re: sanding sealer

A true sanding sealer is a clear finish that has stearates added so it sands easily and does not clog the sandpaper. Most often it is lacquer. The only difference I know of between spraying lacquer and brushing lacquer is the addition of retarder to the brushing lacquer so it has a chance to flow out a little better to reduce brush marks. I had no idea there were less solids in brushing lacquer. I'd have to see SDS pages to verify percentages of solids.

Re: For Turnings

From what I read on the SDS information, Deft semi gloss aerosol is 25% solids and brushing lacquer is 19%. But those sheets are confusing. Could you provide the data that backs up your information. I'm not confident in what I found.
