CA Age

Does CA get weak with age?  I've got a pint of medium Starbond CA that I've kept in the fridge for years; still sets up and reacts to accelerator.  But when I use it to re-glue in a cutter on one of my Ellsworth-style boring bars (1/2") I get two cuts and then the glue fails and the cutter just drops out of the bar.  I use the 1/2" bars for smaller jars to keep the opening smaller.  I'm not high on trying to drill and tap a 1/2" bar to use a set screw.

Went looking for a replacement 1/2" boring bar, but have no willingness to spend $100+ for a straight bar and cutter.

Re: CA Age

My experience with CA is that accelerator creates a more brittle bond than without, and like the original Ellsworth tools I drill a hole to receive a HSS alloy bit with a rounded "tail" to fit in the shaft hole, creates a much stronger mechanical bond. I have used CA stored in the fridge for extended time but don't have any empirical proof of aging creating defective bonding.

Same Here

How long a "tail" do you make?  Mine were 1/4" which is what David used.  Use "medium" or "thin"?

The "tails" I make are about 3/8" in length, 1/4" seems too short. and medium CA for bonding.

Re: The "tails"

That's what I've been thinking.  Thanks
