I call this composition "Happenstance" because it was a completely serendipitous happening.  I did not plan the combination in advance.

The bowl is hybrid elm 6-1/2" long, and the spheres are 2" diameter macacauba, turned from a single turning square by a method I developed as I went.  Each sphere has only one total rotation (for removal of one nub and sanding that area) in cup chucks, not the dozens normally used for turning and sanding spheres.

I think they go well together; C&C most welcome and encouraged.

Re: new work

Nice work. I like that natural edge.

thanks, Ray

I kept the bowl a little on the thick side to keep and emphasize that bark.  This elm has some interesting stuff (stripes) going on in the inner bark or cambium area.

Re: new work

Like the low sheen on the balls.  Nice

thanks, Mark,

I'm not a fan of glassy gloss on wood, with some exceptions.  My standard finish is Abralon 4000, which is shiny (particularly with wax), but not glossy.  I find that's a good compromise that leaves the wood looking like polished wood.
