Clifton, I responded to this at some length yesterday (since you seem to have kicked the Turning Forum back into gear) but the post disappeared. So I am trying again.

Those are beautiful and appear wonderfully nearly identical.  Nice job.  Excellent work.

Years ago I was asked to help a guy out who had started turning some table legs and his lathe broke.  They looked like they had been turned by four different people each of whom had no plan and had not seen the others.  I did my best to make them match but it was so hopeless I did not charge the guy.  I would have made four new ones (easier) but the wood had sentimental value.

Thanks for all the responses. Here was my moment of inattention... A chunk off one of the flat faced spheres. Glued with West Syst GFlex epoxy. Turned and sanded, the glue line looked like part of the grain pattern. I hope it will survive the elements.

Why six newel posts? I only count four on the front porch stairs in pics of the latest restoration. Maybe a couple more on the rear steps, which don't have unobstructed pics, that I could find, anyway?
