Salvaged long leaf pine made into boxes
From a window ledge off a 100+ year old commercial building. So much resin I had to wet sand with mineral spirits. To get that fit on the lid, I first turned it for a snug fit. Shoved the lid in and drilled a hole for the pull, and then final turned the top of the lid. Used a little bent pic to sneak into the drilled hole and pulled the lid off. Lightly hand sanded the outside diameter of the lid and got the fit I wanted.

Beautifully done, Dick! Spectacular finish on those boxes. Don't you just love turning this old wood. It always amazes me how it smells fresh cut while you are working with it.

The shock for me was removing 1/16" of gray weathering revealed wood that looked like it got cut yesterday. Such a shame that species was nearly wiped off the earth! Wood smell has always enthralled me. Cut a piece of birch and I'm in 7th grade shop again. But same thing happens when I open a can of Deft. Those the only choices for us little pups just coming off the farm. Other wood was available once I went to high school.

The piece was 2 1/2" thick x 6" wide, x 4' long. It was over 100 years old and exposed to weather over it's entire life. I didn't measure the moisture content, just turned it. I sold one and gave the other to my friend that let me dig it out of the dumpster. Good deal for him since I was helping him put in the new windows.

I failed to give a tip of the cap to Craig Lossing for the inspiration to use pins through a post idea for the drama and slight benefit for lifting the lid off. He usually adds multiple pins, but I love the look.
