You could machine a clamping block that would fit your lathe perfectly. Aluminum and Brass can be turned on a wood lathe if you use the right tool for the job and take your time.

IMO, I don't think the clamping block has anything to do with the locating of the banjo. It just slides under the ways or in some cases with the recessed sides of the block if it has them within the ways when loose. The banjo is held in place by the vertical pressure caused by the clamp tightening when the lever is turned not. This means you actually want a bit of clearance if there is a portion that slides in the underside of the gap in the ways or it will bind when moving the banjo.
