Revolving steb centers, eccentric work. Some notes.

I was turning one of Neil Scobie's Offset Turned Doughnuts, American Woodturner, February 2014, with a Penn State Sorby revolving stub center knock-off in the tailstock.  The center cracked just before the internal bearing. I'm OK, but that is sort of a scary situation.


Went shopping for a replacement today. The Sorby's are pretty expensive, about $89. And, yes, I'm sure they are very good. But most of the online stores appear to be out of stock.


Went to, The Woodturning Store, to check their price. They don't carry them, but they do carry a similar product from Axminster. I have several Axminster chucks and find them very well made and solid. The price on this was $54.99. Don't have it yet, can't give it a review, but I suspect if it is built like their chucks, it will last a LONG time. They have 2 sizes, one about 7/8" in diameter, the other 5/8".

FYI, it is stainless steel, made in the UK

Axminster Stainless Steel Revolving Steb-like center. 7/8" diameter, there is also a 5/8" for the same price.

Axminster Revolving Center (21mm = 7/8", slightly less) arrived today

Looks good. Appears well made. Chance to test it out probably won't happen for a bit. Comes with a hex wrench to adjust the point. Morse taper is hollow to reach the adjustment screw.

Thanks for the update. Is the Morse taper threaded so that you can use a drawbar with it?

Never mind about the drawbar question. I forgot that this is the live steb center thread. I have been looking for something like the Robust live center with the 1"x8 tip with drawbar support. I want to be able to mount a small chuck on the live center and put the spindle in tension when I am doing the first turning of an inside-out turning.

I'll have to check.


What would be the advantage to using a draw bar for a live steb center? Just curious. I'm not picturing a use in my head.

OK. Think that might stress things, depending on the chuck. Would want a fairly light chuck. The Oneway live center does have fittings that screw onto it that will give you a 1"x8 or 1.25"x8 (or, of course 33mmx8) thread that would allow you to thread on a chuck, but I think it is intended for alignment only. Then again, most inside-outs aren't that heavy.

Oneway sells the adaptor and/or live center that you are looking for, for both 1-1/4" and 1". It would work on a Robust as the internal threads are 3/4" by 10tpi.
