I'm attaching a base to one end grain end (centered on the pith) and hollowing in through the other end, where I will add a lid, so the heaviest absorption by end grain will be negligible. And I like the progression of color moving toward and away from the end grain. I think the central region (this is a Masur Birch sphere) has a very impressionistic look to it. Reminds me of a painting by either Manet or Monet, or maybe Van Gogh. (No ears were sacrificed in the making of this sphere.)
