my first turning

Pretty sure this was done around 1983. I had moved into a house that had a basement and I built a workbench but also needed some space to store all the yard chemicals and paints and other stuff. I built these cabinets using nothing but a router, a skill saw, hand plane and drill. I built the knobs using my drill attached to my workbench and a sharpened screwdriver that I used as a scraper. Man have I come a long way since then.

I remember the first thing I turned using an Erector set motor and parts.It was a gavel the head was less than an inch and the handle was less than two. Have no idea what happened to it or even what I used as a tool.

A couple of drawer pulls like you have here were the first things I ever turned also. Cut off screw mounted in the drill press, block of wood for tool rest, and bench chisels..... 1993 or so for me...

camera repair school

I really did learn how to sharpen a screwdriver when I was in camera repair school. It's really important to not have a screwdriver slip and either tear up the head or scratch the camera. So we learned how to select the proper size and keep it sharp so it fits the slot as accurately as possible. I still sharpen my regular flat blade screwdrivers the same way and regularly. Phillips on the other hand are really hard and take patience and skill. I don't even bother on my standard phillips and would only take the the time on my really small camera screwdrivers.
