It case Jake doesn't get back soon, I can attempt to tell you what he told me when I asked the same question. He said each dot was applied by hand with a touch of the brush. I think he said the application time and amount of iridescent paint determined if it made a circular dot or spread. A close look showed the dots looked beautifully hand-applied with subtle irregularities instead of done mechanically.

I haven't tried Jake's method yet (but I need to because they are perfect). I'm drawing a blank this morning on the ladies name from England who does a lot of dot kinds of things. Her's are raised dots. She uses different sized pieces of wire or nails and dips it in colored epoxy and then just touches the wood. I tried and it works although you do need the epoxy thinned just right.

Louise Hibbert. Love her work. I've been using a fair amount of dots this past year with metallic and iridescent paints, especially on this year's batch of Christmas ornaments. Sometimes my hand shakes at the last second and the dot doesn't go exactly where I want it to go.

The Dots........

Dennis - the dots are done using anything with a round end. The size of the round end determines the size of the dot. I think it works best if the end of the round piece is nearly flat. On this ornament, I used a wood skewer used for grilling/cooking. Its about 1/8" in diameter. Usually they have pointed ends, so i just cut it off and squared up the end. Dip the end of the stick into your paint about 1/8". Then push the end of the stick onto your project. You don't want to push it all the way against your project because it will cause it to squeeze out more on one side. So with a little bit of practice on a scrap piece of wood, you will get a nice round dot. I use whatever I have laying around. The end of a finishing nail or the end of a paper clip all work well. They also are often different sizes. When I do the faces on my snowmen, I use a finishing nail and the paper clip to get different size dots for the eyes and the mouth. Give it a go with a piece of scrap wood and some acrylic paints. Hope this helps. Jake
