I remember making one of these after i read your article but it was years after the article came out. I also hollowed a few through the bottom to learn that technique. I still use the bottom hollowing for long skinny neck vessels.

My entire experience in this area (and it's probably not really equivalent) is making a half dozen Christmas ornaments this past December. When I hollowed out the globes the interior was really rough due to the chatter from my angled small tool but I didn't care since I was going to be closing it off with the finials. When you make these larger vessels that are intended to have an open top, what is the interior surface appearance (I've never seen this mentioned)? Always loved the aesthetics of these vessels and would like to give it a shot one day...

These pieces are relatively smooth and even, I always try for a good surface. The small neck is not to hide anything, but it certainly can. Just do the best you can and be critical, but not hard on yourself. The more you do, the better you will be. Have a little fun, its only wood.

John, thank you for sharing your link on making a small necked bottle. I had fun giving it a try on a piece of maple. While not perfect by any means I did learn a lot and hope to do better. This one measures 4" tall. I also need to learn more about lighting, I had a heck of a time with reflections!
