A friend of mine has a CBN wheel which he mistakenly used to sharpen some carbon steel tools. Oops. Is there any way he can clean it up?

Yup. A little lapping fluid or light oil, on the bevel, not the wheel, helps, but isn't necessary. Just take a good heavy M2 or harder metal scraper to the wheel and sharpen it as normal. Make sure it is good M2 and not some of the cheap stuff from overseas. It most likely won't all come off at once, but with several sharpenings, it will be pretty much gone. Oh, don't do carbide to clean it. The build up is peeled away as you sharpen with the harder metals.

I was thinking of buy a new wheel for a grinder I use to sharpen plane blades, chisels, and planer knives. Various metals. The planer knives are laminated. Some sort of harder metal for the edge and steel for the body.
My question is would a CBN wheel be suitable for this?
How about for sharpening various tools for the wood lathe?

I use four CBN wheels (different grits) for all woodturning tools.
No problem with hardened steel. I've ground mild steel many times and without loading the wheels, but sparingly and gently. Good question about the laminated blades - I suspect they will be OK but maybe try it. Unlike serious metal shaping, in sharpening a plane iron you will be removing very little metal.
Flat workers on another forum have been buying CBN wheels for chisels and planes and such. Maybe there is some experience now.

...DWayTools stated that the easy way clean a loaded CBN wheel was to sharpen your largest HSS scraper! I have ground some carbon tools on my CBN without an significant loading, and the traces have been quickly removed with further sharpening of HSS tools.

I regularly sharpen my Big Ugly tools on the CBN wheels. The cutting material, Tantung, is silver soldered onto bar/sheet stock. No loading problems. I do keep the heel ground back like my bowl gouges, so I am not letting too much soft metal get on the wheel. I do use a big belt sander to round over the heel. I would expect that the planer blades would pose little problem. Using a bit of lapping fluid on my bevels is a regular part of sharpening. If you try to put it on the wheel, you get a racing stripe on your shirt...
