I have been using this 1221vs lathe for 5 years or so. I added an extension bed when I bought it and use it for chair legs. For quite awhile now I have noticed a light clicking from the drive end. It doesn't go away at high speed.When turning by hand it clicks once every revolution. The sound appears to be coming from the motor drive pulley. I looked over the belt and all pulleys. Checked the set screws for tightness. If I tap the motor pulley towards the motor it goes away until it starts and runs for a short while then it is back. Does anyone have any ideas what I should look for?

I am a carpenter by trade.Also a handyman/Jack -of-all-trades.I work around my neighborhood mostly helping people keep up their old houses.I have a fairly large woodworking shop in my house where I work with both hand and power tools. At the moment I'm focusing on Windsor chairs building.I will build most anything if needed. I'm always learning,adapting,changing trying to broaden my woodworking skills.I work mostly with hand tools in my shop but will use power if it is a better way to get the desired result. My wife,Donna,and I live in the woods of Maine with our dogs,cats,and birds. We have 5 grown kids and six grandchildren. Woodcentral has been central to my growth as a woodworker. I pass through this place every day.

Either the pulley is loose, or speed sensor

The speed sensor resides inside the head and has been known to make a light contact with the magnetic disc. The pulley has two set screws in one hole. So remove the first one and make sure the one contacting the key is tight. Then put the second one back in and tighten it.

I assumed the pulley was loose but the set screw wouldn't tighten anymore. That explains it. I will know for sure tomorrow. thanks

This is a common problem with the Speed sensor coming loose on the shaft. Tighten as described for a loose pulley.

The problem was in the lower drive pulley. It has two set screws opposite each other. Only one was tightening. The other had dinged threads and wouldn't screw in all the way. It kept stripping allen wrenches. I chased the threads and put it back in. Problem solved.
