Burl help!

I'm wondering night Burl's are spiky under the bark or smooth or some of both? I found a couple small Burl's and trying to debark them but I see some very small spikys. But the majority is smooth curvy. I'm not even sure what type of wood it is. I think it's maple.

There are eyed burls, and onion burls. There are also overgrowths that may look like burls, but there are repairs around a wound or more likely a broken off limb. In nearly every case, the old broken off limb is rotten since it may have taken a decade to fully surround the limb. Eyed burls have the most appeal and wild grain, onion burls will have a more subtle figure, and in some orientations maybe just a subtle curl, and overgrowths can be difficult to turn without breaking out of a thin wall around rotten wood.
