"Got some Hackberry today. It came from William& Merry." Hope you spell check before sending to the engraver!!!! Hackberry turns great.

Turned green it's pretty bland. If aged it will develop some very nice spalting. I found the best in some pieces I stored standing on end in the garage. There is a rather short time between spalt and punk.

Hackberry is among my favorite woods.........

....for turning, especially with spalting to decorate the rather bland grain patterns. It is also very available here in KY, also known as Sugarberry, which often attracts those big black wood ants when a standing tree is hollowed from the inside.

Enchanting wavy lines of late wood pores in late season growth, like American and red elm.

I believe it is a very hard wood, and splitting it for firewood is a job!

It's softer than white ash. What makes splitting hackberry an issue is interlocking grain.

Don is exactly right. It is a pretty white with a lot of shimmer/chatoyance that not many woods have. Folks are also right about the spalting. You can rough turn the piece and bag it in plastic tightly and it will be spalted nicely in a couple of months.

Its good wood and underused.
