While I was gone...

Mike Schwing

Some of you are aware I have been known to make some, uh... unusual things. Bugs, eyepods, brains, etc..

At the time I made this, titled "Migraine" I was suffering from debilitating migraines and this was an attempt to depict how they felt. It felt like ice picks stabbing the front right side of my brain. That's what I made. All items were turned and some then carved, other than the steel pins on the ice picks, which are from coat hangers. I made it interactive so viewers can put the picks wherever their head hurts. What to do with the base evaded me for a long while, but my gf said "duh, it needs to be impaled on an ice pick." Done! Thanks for looking. Enjoying being back.

But now the important question is........

JamieDonaldson

....what has developed with your migraines? Have you found a successful treatment that you can share with your fellow sufferers, like me? >(

Sometimes a lack of magnesium will cause severe migraines....

Jamie, they just stopped. For about 5 years I would get classic migraine - first the visual aura, which for me looked like I was looking through a cracked piece of glass and/or words were missing when reading something. That usually lasted a few minutes then within 20 later my head would explode.

I can't identify any causal factors in their cessation, which itself is scary.

Same here with the exact symptoms - starting with a very interesting patch of fractal lines which slowly moved across my vision (in both eyes). Then a headache that would put me down. If I paid attention at first, I took an Imitrex tablet which short-circuited the progression if I took it in time.

Eventually the frequency decreased to one a year or so then stopped completely. Knock on cocobolo.

A trip to the dentist or proctologist would be preferred compared to a typical migraine headache. On occasion when one of these strike I am usually forced into a dark room to minimize external stimuli. Bright lights and noise can bring on an attack and also increases the intensity, if you are unable to escape the external stimuli that is an irritant to the compromised brain function during an attack. If I catch the early symptoms of a migraine and treat them early they can be bearable, if I ignore the early symptoms and a full blown migraine occurs it can take a day or two to recover.

Sensory deprivation

I used to do that too. Then I read a medical study that indicated sensory deprivation can increase the discomfort. There reason was that with no other stimuli we are more aware of the pain because we have nothing else to distract us.

The recommendation was to have soft music, quiet TV in the background, sit outside instead of in a dark room. Worked for me.

...daily prophylactic treatment, which cut my migraines by about 50% in intensity and duration, which usually lasted 3 days. When I can now feel one starting, I take a 50MG Sumitriptan(generic Imitrex) and it takes effect in about an hour. Goodbye migraines! :b

Jamie,

Are there any side effects from the Amitriptyline? That has to be a miracle if it can stop a 3-day migraine from kicking in, those can be horribly debilitating.

A quick google search on side effects and the usual list of warnings seem to always show up. I was watching a documentary the other day on a similar drug that is used for anesthesia that has shown potential in the treatment or outright cure for severe depression. A large percentage of people show great improvement after one doctor prescribed drug therapy session in a treatment center. (Ketamine) This drug has a tainted history with a history of misuse, but like any other drug the potential for misuse always follows monetary profits.

I've had no side effects from the Amitriptyline,..

.... but another med I take for my Essential Tremors (Propanolol) has affected my balance, and I also blame it for my increasing short term memory loss!
