Ralph in my attempt to learn what the threads are on auto valve stems I have seen Scharder referenced. But no where could I find what it means.

Do you know for sure if the tire valves used in USA on automobiles are that type of valve?

Schrader had the patent (back when, like 1800's) and all tires, etc use the same basic design

Fixed it for you. Where you see the distinction made, and where you could search for the differences, is in bicycling equipment. High end bike wheels often use Presta valves and therefore bike stores need to distinguish. (It's not the tire that matters, since all bike wheels use tubes, but the way the rim is drilled for the stem.) Schrader is spring loaded and more convenient at car tire pressures. Presta is lighter and closes mechanically, making it preferred where grams matter (to some) and you're using significantly higher pressures.

Not all bicycle tires have tubes now. You will see "tubeless ready" or tubeless when you buy a new bike. That is if you buy at a bicycle shop and not Walmart.

Well I did that originally but it is a little more complicated than that.

I purchased a metal cap but it is necessary that I cut only 1/8" off it and use that as the nut. Why? Because I need to have enough of the valve sticking out so I can get a tire gauge on it and also an air hose to put air in when necessary.

The problem with the way I did it is that it is round and only 1/8" so I cannot tighten it good enough.

What this set up is for is my Chev Silverado and this set up is for the spare tire.

I purchased the thing from Amazon which is really just a hose that locks onto the spare tire under the truck for this purpose but it came with no nut, I drill a hole small enough below the tailgate that the hose is tight in the hole until I push the air hose on it, then it moves back into the hole.

I have tried for a long time to find a nut or a tap so I can make one but no luck so far.

I'm still not sure of the tpi, Dennis above said they are 36 but the way he said it I'm not positive he meant it as fact.

Sorry but I gotta be sure are you saying they are 1/4" x 36 tpi?

I'll check again with my set of gauges but I don't think I had one that fit and I'm sure I have a 36 in there.

Wikipedia shows these dimensions for a standard shrader tire valve.

External thread: 0.305" x 32 TPI (ref: 3)

Internal thread: 0.209" x 36 TPI

Buy a thin nut like one used on a toggle switch, drill out the inside diameter, and solder the round metal cap into it.

mike I check stem today with my gauge and the info you put on here is correct. The outside threads are 32 tpi, diameter read .290 below the threads, there is a very small area that has no threads where I was measuring.

Dick that's not a bad idea or I can just make a plate out of metal and solder the nut I made, thanks.

I did make something today that may work, I'll test it tomorrow.

I cut a 1" x 2" piece from 1/16" thick galvanize metal today. Drilled a hole large enough to slide over the threads then drilled a second hole but let the drill bit slightly overlap the first hole. This left two nibs where the holes met I then used my diamond file to cut down the sharp point on both those until I could slide the the stem from the first larger hole into the smaller second hole. The threads will not go back through the second hole so I'll see if that holds it. I then bent up one end of the contraption so I can push it with finger to move it from hole to hole.
