Talked with Wholesale Tools.
They have a special order 1/2" x 1/2" x 8" long M2 steel bit at a reasonable price ($17/each). I have ordered two and will see if they are suitable.

Did that include shipping?
Last time I bought standard HSS they were $9 for the 1/2 sq X 8"
They still show the HSS with 5% cobalt for $15 which I have gone to over the standard.
