Below, in an earlier post, I praised Jet/Wilton for good tech service in helping me diagnose my starting cap problem.

I ordered a new one.

I received a new one.

It is not the correct physical size to fit in the can enclosure on the motor.

It is also not the correct capacitance, although that may be a problem or not -- it's only half what it should be, although the new size is physically larger.

I am not a happy camper.

They are, of course, closed for Labor Day, so I'm going to have to wait another three days to even talk to them about the problem and probably another week to get a replacement, if they even have one.

This hand cranking is getting old.

Entering "motor starting capacitor" on ebay got me 6,601 hits. Finding the right size/capacitance may be a chore but hey, it's the weekend, plenty of time!

You might have a local supplier with one in stock. There is one near here that I located by asking at a motor repair shop. They had a bewildering number of motor capacitors, but unfortunately not one that would fit in the metal wart on my Jet mini lathe. No problem if I was willing and had the time to make a new protective housing. (And it would have been a fraction of Jet's price.)

You could check Grainger Company on the internet or just take the numbers off of the old capacitor and so a search on EBay you can find bargains on new and used components that might get you fixed up.

Some people are never satisfied unless things are done just right. Where is your sense of adventure? Just get a piece of bailing wire and tie that sucker to the side of the motor and you will be good to go.

Seriously, if it is start capacitor (not start/run) then the value isn't critical. The actual tolerance on this type of capacitor is often +/- 50% of the nominal value marked on the can. A start capacitor is only in the circuit for a fraction of a second and then is disengaged by the centrifugal switch when the motor reaches about 70% of full speed.

If it is a start/run capacitor like the Jet 1014 mini uses then that is a different matter. Start/run capacitors are more rugged because they work 100% of the time and for peak performance it's best to use the right value capacitor.

FWIW, you could save a pocketful of change by buying an off the shelf replacement from a source such as Grainger rather than Jet ... but I think you said it was still in warranty.

I've had some interesting customer service experiences. We probably all have.

Just noticed it is sixteen years old so maybe not in warranty.

I guess I'm old fashioned...

When I buy something from the manufacturer, I expect them to know the right part, to have the right part in their inventory, and to send me the right part. Is that too much to ask? In 2018, maybe it is. Sad.

I will bring this to their attention on Tuesday and see how it washes out from there.
