Re: 1/2 x 1/2 x 18" steel for Bedan source?

I may be wrong (if so, I expect someone will correct me), but high-speed steel (HSS) is a fairly broad category of steel, while M2 is a fairly specific specification for a type of steel that falls within that category. So asking if we'd prefer HSS or M2 is a bit like asking if we'd prefer a pickup truck or an F-150 (please, no jokes about how the new F-150's aren't real trucks compared to brand 'x').
M2 has been the 'standard' steel for woodturning tools for a really long time. However, other, newer HSS steels have been on the market for 10+ years. Doug Thompson uses A-11 that has been triple tempered with a cryogenic treatment between the first and second temper. Others use M42. These newer steels should last longer between sharpening (that's been my experience), but they also cost more.
Do you really want a 1/2" square blank? If you're going to be reaching a long way over the tool rest, you might need the tool to be that thick. If not, I'm afraid the extra thickness will get in your way as you turn beads. Just a thought.
