…. here are 3 additional pieces I turned from quilted White Oak. The trick to pop the grain is a first application of diluted acrylic black paint, excess wiped off while still wet. I tend to select primary colors when making multiples, and the TransTint dyes are diluted with alcohol. Gloss finish is 3 coats of Krylon Crystal Glaze.

Do you have any idea or guess as to what Krylon Glaze is?
I ask because I have a rattle can of it and have never used it yet.
I purchase it several years ago and switch to airbrush right after getting it.
I have been trying to learn more about airbrush paint and especially clear finishing with it and have settled just last week on using Createx produces because they have finally settled on additives that are well explained without switching names. An example is there thinner which was W100 then they came out with W500 never could find out when to use one verse the other but NOW!
There is 4012 (which I learned is the same as W500). So if you need a thinner from now on it is just 4012. There new stuff in this arena is 4000 something, like 4020, 4030 etc. I just ordered all of it and will pass on how it works and 3 weeks or so if anyone wants to know.
Dick Blick carries all this line and so does Amazon, oh, don't forget Restorer, that is a cleaner but you soak your airbrush in it TIP END ONLY, this stuff will eat seals out of the brush, go to Createx.com and see videos I think they are on UTube also.
So anything on the Glaze you can pass on?

...Crystal Glaze are often found in craft stores, and I believe it to be an acrylic but it doesn't say on the cans. I use it when I need a quick building gloss finish to show off some grain or color. I also find it at Wally World when I can't find it elsewhere, don't go to WW unless I have to!

Back in the day when I was making sea urchin ornaments I used the triple thick Krylon glaze to strengthen the urchin shells by spraying on several coats. Learned that trick from Ed Moore.
Later I started filling the shells with polyurethane foam which almost totally prevented breakage but sure was a mess if I guessed wrong on how much to squirt into a shell.

I learned the hard way that you have to let that foam dry before trying to do anything with it. Still a pain however. I think acetone will eat it so if I try this idea I'll wait for it to dry , cut away what I can and then use acetone with small brush to clean the outside of the shell.
Thanks for the tip, I've made those same ornaments but never filled them like you did.
