new projects

I was cutting some wood for another project and ended up salvaging what looked like a couple of bowl blanks so I turned these. I'm doing an Angel turning demo Wednesday and thought I would try a different way of doing the wings.

What did you use to make the wings?

I used a scroll saw to cut out the shape. then Used my woodburner to carve in the feathers and painted over that. When I turn the more plain wings which are basically just a shallow bowl with cuts into both ends I often just carve the V slot with a chip carving knife.

Beautiful angel! How do you attach the wings to the body? I hope that your demo will be videotaped and made available. Looking forward to making some.

I attached these wings with small brads. I don't really like that method. I normally prefer to turn the wings with a small tenon that I use to glue into a hole on the body. With these wings I tried to turn the tenon off center but it just would not work. The new wings I'm designing will have a larger surface area and can probably be glued on successfully with epoxy. I will probably get it done tomorrow and maybe get a photo by thursday. I think we decided to quit taping our club demos because no one was checking them out.

Outstanding as Always!

I like them all very much but particularly the fluted edge bowl.
