I just completed one of the best weekends of woodturning I have had in a very long time if not ever. Two days of hands on instruction with Jimmy Clewes in our local club shop. I managed to complete all 3 projects he had for us and just had a great time. As we all know, he is just a very nice man as well as an excellent turner and instructor as well as funny and humble. He did two 2-day classes and a demo for our club on Thursday evening. I hope he had as much fun as we did.
Nice turnings Don! What is the one that Jimmy is holding for you?
I've yet to turn a winged bowl but will some day, maybe. I like the size of that one, do you remember the approximate dimensions of the starting blank?
Thanks Don! That was the project we spent all day Saturday working on. He would demo a bit then we would do what he did, then the next bit and so on. It's a lidded box with ogee wings. Lots of fun and Jimmy makes it straightforward with his methods. Lots of draw/pull cuts with the wing of a side ground (long grind, Ellsworth grind, etc.) bowl gouge. Dimensions of the base are about 7" x7" x 2" thick, top is about 3" x 3" x 2" thick. Lots of fun and high RPM's-way more than usual for me but it became normal by the end of the day.
The mini hat was an exercise in turning thin and was challenging but fun-I could have gone a little thinner.
