Why I like turning

I am waiting for a friend to come over with a giant sculptural piece that needs photographing. So what do you do while you wait. Turn something. I cleaned out the garage, set up all the photo equipment and still had time so I turned this mirror. It will have another try at the fake abalone inlay.

Looks like you've some of very nice photo lighting equipment. No wonder people ask you to help them out with picture taking.

My friend Jerry Spady brought this up for me to shoot. Trying to shoot a 7'9" piece in a garage with 8 foot ceiling joists was interesting. Was able to put the background up between the moists and get 8 1/2 feet. Had to shoot if from the ceiling to be able to crop out the 2x4's. We also couldn't get the background away from the piece which made it interesting to light.
I use Paul C Buff White lightening electronic flash which is what we used at work for location shooting. Works pretty well. Really needed more room and more height to do a decent job but it will work for what he has planned. You can see my homemade panels on the right.
Jerry uses a technique he calls "Outlay". Basically making minature plywood shapes from veneer. The shapes are very strong and light and of course he can use any wood he chooses.
