I seldom turn shallow bowls like......

....this but just had to reveal the beauty of the feather pattern in this walnut crotch I roughed and stored away several years ago. Sanding dry walnut sure makes a dusty mess even with good dust collection at the lathe! Bowl is 11"W and finished with 2 coats of Minwax Wiping Poly, will get another coat soon. ;)

I dressed the rim up a bit with........

Keeping the flame

Nice job. I'm tempted to make shallow platters from crotch wood to keep from cutting away the flame.

Lots of times I see a crotch cut right down the center to make two pieces. What I've done instead is cut a little to one side of the middle, leaving only one piece but giving room to turn down and expose the optimum flame rather than worry about cutting too much away. I have a few like this on the shelves, dried without cracking.
