Extremely abrasive wood

I was turning a large oak platter yesterday and could not turn more than a few inches without it dulling my Thompson gouges. I have used those to turn aluminum and it didn't dull as bad. I ended up using my Hunter Viceroy to flatten the piece and then used a Hunter Hercules to start shaping and for final cuts. I still have a lot of places to fill with epoxy to make this thing work. Hopefully it's not a waste of time.
Had a hunch we'd hear about Hunter tools again

Live oak is miserable stuff....was that it? A pin oak Bowl I turned cut so cleanly I didn't sand it at all.

If you enjoy abrasive wood I have some walnut for you, a thick mantel, said to be 100 years old. It dulled a Starrett bimetal bandsaw blade just cutting out a few box blanks.
