Micro Mask

Anyone use any liquid masking for air brushing. I have tried it twice now. I can't get it to peel off the wood. I put down a coat of finish on the piece first which is what I'm told you have to do otherwise it won't peel. Still won't peel. The stuff is useless if I can't get it to peel off the wood. The areas I need to mask are too rounded to use regular frisket or tape so I really need this stuff to work.

I've used a gum eraser as a frisquet remover, the brownish, tannish kind. Sort of soft and shreds easy.
I'm sure there are lots of frisquets. The one I'v used is by Pebeo, called Drawing Gum Liquid Frisquet. I guess, as the saying goes...YMMV

thanks Clifton. I have good erasers. Another person also said to put on 2 or 3 layers, that one layer just doesn't have enough body to be removed.

John, I have used a product much like that (can't recall the exact name without going out to my shop but I think it is called Sign Strip). You need to spray lacquer on the piece first. I forgot once and had the same problem as you. I could not get it off! As long as you spray the lacquer first you should have no problem at all. It works very well for air brushing. Hope that helps. I put wipe on poly on for my test. If that doesn't work I'll try lacquer.

John I use several products one is called ( sign strip ) works great. I spray on about 3 coats to make a good mask that peels off easily. It's available from a sign shop supply company in our area. The down side is I haven't found it in less than 1 gallon containers & that makes it a little expensive.
The other product I've found to work well & is relatively cheap and readily available at our local home improvement stores ( Menards, Lowes, Home Depot ) is Plastic Dip removable spray paint. It comes in several colors (I like either the white or red. A black technical pen shows up nicely on these colors) it takes about 3 coats also. The down side to this product is it has a strong odor like enamel paint. The plus side is it's only about $7 for a can that's the size of a regular size can of spray paint. The other thing I like to do is to use it outdoors to keep over spray from getting on everything. For the cost it's worth trying out sometime even just to experiment with. You do need to seal the surface first I use varnish & sand it back before I apply either.

Thanks Joe will look into that. I did find a video saying the Micromask was the worst of the masking products. Just my luck. When I first started airbrushing I used water to thin my paints. Then i found out that you should at least use distilled water but official airbrush thinner was better. They were right. So I guess it's a lot like learning to turn with Harbour freight tools vs Thompson tools. You gotta get the good stuff if your gonna do this right.
