Stihl is doing a new advertising campaign about its new longer life lithium battery-powered equipment including chain saws. Anyone have an idea how realistically these batterys are good for?

Over the past couple weeks, I've pruned six small trees, with branches up to 3" diameter, trimmed up half a dozen shrubs, and cut a 15 foot long fallen ash branch that was about 6" diameter at its base into 16" long firewood pieces.
The saw's battery still shows one light out of the original four (25% left). I have two Stihl gas saws, but the battery powered one is fast becoming my 'go to' saw for most (non-felling) work.

With a spare fully charged spare battery you can swap out and keep cutting while the other battery is charging. This is what makes most cordless tools advantageous for construction work. Just so long as you have access to a power outlet or several fully charged batteries you can stay busy most of the day. You could also get a 12V invertor and use the charger on a remote site hooked up to your 12V vehicle battery if you don't have access to a 120V outlet.

Is it good to put a just drained, warm battery directly into a charger? I thought I read it's good to let them cool down. This might just make rapid fire battery swaps an issue.

For the average person (2) batteries would be plenty for processing a few logs and loading them up to bring them back home to add to the wood inventory. If you want to cut wood like a lumberjack all day long, then you might need a third battery if you are cutting redwood trees and using a pay-loader to load a semi trailer with.
For some people a cordless chainsaw would be a great choice, I have a bad shoulder and can not afford to screw around with a gas chain saw when it decides to be a pain and not start on the 1st or 2nd pull.

The Stihl charger has a fan and a temp sensor in it. It will cool the battery to a proper temp before it'll begin charging it. Downside (if any) is that it may take twice as long - or even longer - than you'd think to recharge a battery if it's hot to start with.

I don't know about the Stihl, but I have some experience working with one from DeWalt. They have put out a model designed for Firefighters. I got to cut several slices of telephone pole, not easy stuff to go through. Battery held up for several hours of use by multiple people, no loss of torque going through the pole, and best of all for firefighters, the motor doesn't choke out with all the smoke from a fire like I have had happen to me before, or flood when you are trying to start it at a critical moment.
I was super skeptical when I first saw it, (no pun intended), then I used it. I would buy one in a heartbeat.
