As you said, John, excellent video. It goes well beyond the "box of straws" concept.

That's a great explanation of grain orientation. I have struggled to try and get people to understand this for many years with little success. As Cyril said-much better than the "bundle of straws" that we often use. I have tried several other visual aids but this one could be the answer.
I thought I caught a small error when he was drawing on the bowl example where his "against the grain" arrows were in the wrong direction. I could be wrong though. I should look again.

What is said at 4.20 is wrong, where he starts the circle going down it is going against the grain, the rest is OK.
All this info is/was already in Richard Raffan’s “Turning Wood” book, I would recommend his books any day.
Here is one picture that is that book that shows red arrows for the wrong direction of cutting and black arrows for the right or better direction.

I am with you Leo. Haven't found books/videos better than Mr. Raffan's. And they continue to provide value every time I go back to them, there's always more details to pick up. The first Raffan video I purchased was a VCR tape, and I keep a VCR player so I can watch it several times a year.

Perhaps not clear at 4:20 but he is discussing interior, as explained 13 seconds later at 4:33-4:45

The arrows he uses are directing against the grain.
Interior or exterior has nothing to do with the arrows he has on the circle.
Just a slip up on his part I’m sure, but for those that rely on this kind of info, it should be pointed out, as it seems even here it isn’t grasped.

+1 for Richard Raffan. Have 3 of his books. The explainations, instructions, illustrations are perfect and I love his designs.
