Festool DC

I recently downsized and am setting up my Lathe in my new basement shop. I use a Festool vac to collect sawdust when sanding my turnings. I've been thinking about using a system live the Dust Deputy to collect some of the larger shavings. Oneida will not recommend any system other than one designed specifically for the Festool Vac. They warn that static buildup can harm the electronics in the vac unless a continuous ground is maintained from the point of collection to the vac which has antic static system built in. Is this a real problem or company self protection fear. The basic Dust Deputy is about $50 the Festool specific kit is $300. I don't want to destroy my Vac, But I also don't want to spend $300 if I don't need to.
Any thoughts on this? has anyone set up a cyclone collection with a Festool ? If so did you set up a static discharge provision?
Thanks,
John
