handled and footed bowl

Had to practice one more of these. I'm doing a demo in colombus, Ga Saturday on carving handles and feet on bowls. I always try to do a practice run on demos before I go just to refresh my techniques.

I love the texture. Is that natural color?

Beautiful work John. Wish your demo was closer.
So wow was the texturing done? Do you have a closeup pic?

John and Carl. The texture was done with a Dremel engrave. I rounded over a broken 1/8" drill bit and polished the end. I use that to scribble the texture. Then I used Gold JoSanjo irridescent paint brushed on and then blown around with my air brush. I think this texture looks better with gold rub-n-buff instead of the JoSanjo paints but the paints sure were quicker and less messy.
Love It !!!
Start round with lots of carving or rectangle?

I've done it both ways. Rectangular leaves wood for two opposing handles but you might have to pay more attention to the grain orientation in the block.
This one started as a rectangle:

I made this after watching an excellent John Lucas demo!

I used to turn round then carve away more
Steven Antonucci
lately, I've been rectangular...
