Thow Top turnings

These throw-tops measure around 3" wide and 4" to 5" tall. From left to right: Black Locust with dyed Box Elder burl accents, Osage Orange with Amboyna burl accents, Olivewood with Bloodwood accents and South American Canaywood. Each has a turned black Delrin tip, acrylic (guitar pick-guard) spacers and a matching press-fit button with hidden cord attachment that can be stored inside the hollow top.

How do you throw these? Underhand with palm up or side arm?
Very pretty, what size blank do you start with?
Do the hand grips (top) snap in or just lay in the recess in the top?
I may try making myself one if I ever get time to play again.

Throw tops are usually held with the tip up and thrown (if you're right handed) from right to left across your body. Here's a good YouTube how-to on the subject:

Rather than use a "button" at the end of the cord, you could use a looped cord (like with a yoyo), and tie it to your finger. But most players prefer the button, so the cord can be quickly re-used for tricks.
Most of the tops I've been making are larger than normal, usually starting with a block of wood about 3" x 4" to 4" x 6", and adding another 1/2" or so in length with the decorative laminations. Almost all production tops are smaller, running about 2" x 3".

Those sure bring back memories of when we played with throw tops in elementary school. That sure seems long ago and far away these days. Of course none of our tops looked like these.
