At least you could sand your lid. I was finishing up a lid on a box also but........ I got the inside and out side to close. so now I have to start all overt again.

What makes it really bad was the top was blackwood.

People, remember, John L.'s day in the shop starts at 4am!

I actually finished a woodturning! A present for a young friend. Faced with what to make for an 11-year-old girl (I had previously given her a lidded box) I decided on a pencil holder, walnut, not yet finished here but with some "danish" oil slopped on:

As a bonus I decided I'd made it too tall and cut off a ring which "turned" out to be perfect for a bracelet. So there, two turnings. You must be impressed.

Related to turning, Gordon S. came by Saturday with big chunks of oak and maple and for some entertainment at the sawmill. I cut bowl, platter, box, and vase/urn blanks. I even got to rescue Gordon's truck with the tractor since for some unfathomable reason he bought a 2wd vehicle that couldn't manage a 3-deg slope.

I didn't know you could still buy a 2wd truck.

I have been working on a sphere, I hollowed it out put the bung back in and had a go at decorating it on the lathe with small circles.

It was a test just to see how I could make one and how I would go about putting circles on it.

I am working on a vase/bottle with a spherical body and two necks set in a Vee pointing to the center of the sphere. I thought at first that I could fully turn it using three axes. Turns out that there are a couple of small areas that cannot be reached from three axes. I need to do a bit of planning on how to proceed.

I'm making a second set of bread plates in an old German style, with "UNSER TÄGLICHES BROT GIB UNS HEUTE" (give us this day our daily bread) in raised letters around the rim. White oak and deliberately fairly heavy to imitate the work of an early bodger.

It's an L3830 HST (hydrostatic) with loader and backhoe. I'm up to three Kubota diesel things now, the tractor, the 60" mower, and the little 4wd farm truck. (love that hydraulic dump bed!) Now all I need is a mini-excavator.

You can come visit and dig up or haul something. I don't let just anybody do that.

I also have an old John Deere "bobcat" for playing in the dirt. What a great toy, er, tool! I used it to level, fill, and compact the ground so I could build my shop. (and to dig up a stump or two)

I am going to have to turn a bit this week... Going up to Oregon State U to demo the McNaughton for 'Dr. Spalt' Seri Robinson's woodturning class. Just starting on building new house and shop too... Haven't done manual labor in years...

As she says, the only person that calls her Sara is her mom.... I get the feeling that she is like the Energizer Bunny.... She does teach woodturning along with her spalting work. She also has 2 science fiction books published. She is also doing a turning demo up in Salem tomorrow night... I will get up for that as well. She has bought some of her students down to Eugene for our club meetings.
