Wild Irish Rose Urn

Dick Coers

Finishing a project for the inevitable, my 86 year old Mother was moved to a nursing home on Dec 26 with severe dementia . Started turning this yesterday morning, and the power went out, went out for almost 40 minutes. It sent a shiver through me. Then when I was final sanding today, I saw this grain pattern in the urn. My Grandfather, an Irishman with the surname of Lynch, always called Mom, his "Wild Irish Rose" after the song. You know, "The dearest flower that grows...." Maybe some would consider this a stretch, but there is no denying it in my mind. That's an Irish Rose in the wood grain. It still needs at least two more coats of finish, but I've been really moved by this and the experience.

Brought a tear to my eye, Dick. I also see the rose, and my wife suffers from advanced Alzheimer's and has been in a memory care facility since the end of April, 2017. Best to you friend.

I feel for both of you I lost my wild Italian rose last summer. She suffered with similar problems among others.

Dick, I see the rose in the grain. What a beautifully crafted and meaningful piece you have done here. I can certainly understand the emotions involved while in the making. A wonderful tribute it is!

Meant to Be.

Sorry to hear about your mother-a very difficult time I'm sure. This piece of wood is obviously meant for just this purpose and is a lovely tribute.

That adds to the mythical feeling!

I have at least 50 pieces of timber that size around here, but I selected that one.

Beautiful Dick. So sorry to hear about your Mom. I hope her urn brings you peace every time you see it.

Absolutely beautiful Dick.

The wild roses of the west coast of Ireland, particularly County Galway, are beautiful and much like what you found in this piece. The Lynch clan was one of the 14 Tribes of Galway and remarkably powerful. Their castle still stands in the city, and houses a bank.

For those who think tea rose when rose is mentioned, here is a picture of the Wild Irish Rose.
