John, isn't it "Yeah, I pulled a tenon"? Sorry - I couldn't resist. The distinction among Yea - Yes in a vote, Yeah - Casual for "I agree" or "Listen to me", and Yay - a form of cheer, is one I struggled with so I am sensitive to it.

I've just started messing with a friend's rose engine lathe.

There is SO MUCH TERMINOLOGY that I have never dealt with and my friend LOVES acronyms so I'm calling stuff "thingie" and his head is spinning off.

What's really funny is that my wife (Nancy) and I are constantly correcting the news people - AND, I too have issues with people who enshrine their mistakes and help perpetuate them through uninitiated newbies.

Sorry to be the one to point this out but in properly educated circles "thingy" is preferred. Of course I understand there is sometimes uncertainty. For example:

....important topic with me, especially in a teaching situation. As a philosophy major I was especially interested in language analysis, and we don't call our turning tools "chisels!" That would mean that turners are known as "chiselers!"

My pet peeve... it's a 'Morse' taper, not a 'Morris' taper...

I hear Morris over and over again.

With the advent of computers and smart phones and laxed use of the English language, you

are seeing just the beginning of this problem. Newspapers are quickly going the way of the

dinosaurs and the past decade has shown many such errors printed in newspapers daily.

Well I don't use tenons or tendons.

I like a recess most times.

But when I don't use a recess I use a spigot.

Well i grew up calling it a mortise and tenon. Now i find out its a spigot and rebate. Sounds like the name of a law firm, spigot and rebate. Or maybe a comedy act.

At first I turned rebates but I never received one no matter how perfectly my rebates were turned.

Only when I started turning recesses was the true joy of woodturning revealed. Now I work toward recess as often as I can.

Thingy is gutter talk for "thingamajig." We need to be careful to stop the decay of English technical language. The Grammar Nazis are watching!

If you don't know the name of something mechanical, but you know it's not a thingamajig, you might call it a whatchamacallit.
