wait a bit longer to see what those cracks do. When they are done "cracking", then you an figure out what the best filler would be depending on the length and size of the cracks. Lot;s of different types of fillers to try out. It's a good looking piece. Don't trash it, save it.

....it say?(;-D) I suspect those are heat checks, maybe from too much sanding heat. Don't give up on it yet, it looks like a good one in progress.

I'll bet you spoke back to that wood when you saw those cracks. I started spraying the outside of hollow vessels while I do the hollowing. At least wood that isn't bone dry. It seems to have reduced the ruined pieces although you know that I don't do many hollow vessels so any one lost is pretty much a major catastrophy so I probably go to extremes.

That's a shame. BTDT I would wrap it with shrink wrap and let it dry from the inside. I might also pour some CA inside and let it soak the area.

Well I could try to save it, but I am not much into nor do I really like patching cracks, just not my thing. The cracks are staying pretty tight as it sits on the workbench drying. Might use it to practice some pyrography. I do think that spraying the outside with some water during the hollowing might have helped, so I will try that little trick the next time I do a hollow vessel. BTW - the shallow 10" square platter is looking good.

Ha! I'm not much interested in fixing cracks either unless there is some overwhelming reason. I've got one like that out on the pile next to the burn pit. It's kind of fun to watch it go.

Hi Jake, it may be too late to attempt this fix, but I had a similar hollow form that cracked like yours. Trent Bosch recommended that I take a damp towel and wrap the entire piece up then put it in a large plastic bag and close off the opening. Then sit it on a shelf for a couple of weeks. To my surprise, when I finally did get around to opening up the bag the cracks had completely closed, and never did reopen. I finished the vessel and it sits on my shelf to this day. Hey Charles - that does sound like a good trick to remember. The piece has been in my cool shop and the cracks have closed up pretty tight. Not sure what I'm going to do with it but still leaning towards some pyrography. Thanks.
