I recently upgraded the "buttons" on my Nova Cole jaws with #3 Black lab plugs, m6x1 shoulder bolts w/ 8mm x 25 mm shoulders and 5/16" washers.

I had to drill a recess in the plugs for the size of the washer so the shoulder would bottom out on the jaw as well as a 5/16 through hole. This worked out great as I now have a taller button and more secure hold on my bowl and I don'y have to worry about running the stock screw through the button. The length of the plug and bolt work out great for a secure fit.

I Should have done this log ago.

Excellent. This sure seems an improvement over the artificial wine corks several of us are using. Do you mind sharing sources for the hardware?

you can also just double stack the stock buttons for about the same money. Any decent hardware store will have the longer screws needed. This works well for most applications.

Bolts are McMaster-Carr you can get just about any hardware, tool or oddball device. https://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/123/3091/=1ayiyuq

Rubber plugs were Amazon Clever delights

I made a set of hooks out of 1/8" by 1" steel. Bent the ends up past 90 degrees, drilled two holes in each and dipped the business end in liquid rubber. They are long enough to extend the reach of the jaws to about 16". they work great for gripping platters and odd shaped pieces. The original idea was to use two bolts in each one but have found one bolt is sufficient.

I would post a picture if I knew how.

Will/do they leave skid marks on the wood?

Fresh out of the package yes, but a rinse and wipe down with denatured alcohol takes care of it.
