New Woodturning Embellishment Technique *PICS*

At least it's new to me...
These tops have a 1.75" wide printed photo-paper cutout embedded into the wood, a metal mesh overlay, and a topcoat of clear resin. The metal mesh is left over from the process of manufacturing sequins and usually comes in 3" to 5" wide rolls. Google "sequin waist" or "puchinella" for more info...lots of potential applications and it's really cheap at around $1 to $2 per linear foot.

This pic shows the round-hole mesh, a 1.75" cutout of the mesh, a 1.75" photo-paper cutout with a 1.00" hole for the top's stem, and the two paper cutters that were used.
BTW, sequin waste comes with lots of different cut-out shapes and should work well as a paint stencil.

Sure...paper cutters or punches are available in dozens of shapes and sizes. I have 3/4", 1", 1.25", 1.5", 1.75" and 2" round cutters in the shop and use them all the time. Lots of places carry them, including Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Amazon.com, several sellers on Etsy, Zibbet and other places. See the link below for Etsy search results.
For the artwork prep, I normally use a PC application called "Microsoft Visio 2010", then print the art on HP photo paper, cut the rounds out, and then mount the art inside an appropriately sized counterbore in the turning using "Gem-Tac" glue. After the glue is dry, I'll use either a two-part epoxy resin to cover it or a less messy epoxy dome.

BTW, if you don't want to use software to create your own art, there are 1,000's of "Digital Collage" art packages that are very inexpensive, and can be instantly downloaded...see link below for Etsy search.
Another good source for artwork is the front or back of playing cards, like this one...although, there may be copyright issues if you plan to sell the turning.
