Greetings all. Just getting started in wood turning. I purchased a Grizzly GO462 lathe and am quite pleased with its performance. I am replacing the tool rest with a Robust rest, 14 inches just is too long for smaller projects. The lower speed of the selectable drive is about 550, and I have had no issue with quality, looseness or anything breaking. It is one heavy lathe, which is good.

I use Robert Sorby tools and the Patriot Chuck systems, quite pleased with the results. I use the One Way sharpening jigs for the tools and it improved my quality by leaps and bounds. My woodshop has a Grizzly dust removal system on all equipment, per my wife's request and my compliance.

Welcome.. glad you are.able.to join us. Dont know where you are but would be glad to help you find a.club nearby. Thats the fastest way i know to beat the learning curve and you get to meet some wonderful people.

The water is fine here but the turning whirlpool will suck your wallet dry! I'm not familiar with the GO462 lathe but it looks similar in capability to the Jet 1642 which is an excellent lathe.

I agree with the Robust tool rest selection. After I got my first one and tried it out I ordered some more! (4, 6 and 9" since I love turning small things.) Excellent rest.

Congrats on finding a wonderful wife who makes you put in a dust collection system! (You are allowed to post pictures of your shop at any time. And lathe. And turnings. And shop dog. )

My name is Don and I'm a Turning addict. There, I finally can admit I have a problem. The problem is not enough time to turn! I work as a Medical Imaging Tech for a living but that's just so I can light and heat the shop and buy more tools. I've been turning since 2000 and it has changed my life. I never had a creative outlet before I discoverd Woodturning and now I can't get enough. After I turned my first pen, my wonderful wife saw how excited I was and bought me a mini lathe. She now refers to herself as a "Turning Widow". She is a potter and quilter so she understands the obsession. My interests in turning are many and varied and I'm sure I will not live long enough to try everything I'd like to, but I'll give it a shot. Unfortunately we don't have any children or pets so you'd think I have all kinds of free time to turn, but for some reason I don't. I belong to the Adirondack Woodturners Association in upstate New York, the Mohawk Valley Woodturners, the Old Country Guild of Woodturnes and AAW, as well as the Northeastern Woodworkers Association. (I'd also like to learn to do flatwork someday.) Happy and Safe Turning, Don

Now that the bug has bite it's too late!

But it's a wonderful hobby and this is the best group of people to be associated with.

On dust collection you have a smart wife continue to listen to her especially when you insist you buy more tools!

On lathe tools the Sorbys are good tools but check out this supplier, he is also a turner and the tools he sells are top notch and cannot be beat in my opinon and there are many on this site who will agree, check out his site at:

Hi, located in Buffalo, Missouri. Have a club in Springfield, but still so busy on weekends and they meet on Saturday, 50 miles one way for me.

Member of the DAV so weekends get busy fast raising dollars to help vets.

thank you, will do. I practice for about an hour or so then review videos and several reference books trying to get a solid technique established. Trying to find time to get out in the woodshop is a challenge, still running a national wildlife conservation organization too.

Hi Don, thanks for the recommendation. I saw his one of his videos last evening on you Tube as a matter of fact, about sharpening using the One Way system.

Liking the hobby more than I should.
